Rebates

A GP referral is not a requirement to see Stephanie for therapy. However if your GP can provide an appropriate referral then you may be eligible for a partial rebate through the Medicare ‘Better Access to Mental Health’ scheme. Please note that not all problems are covered under this scheme.

A Medicare referral requires

Your GP to complete a ‘Mental Health Treatment Plan’ for you and to lodge this with Medicare,

AND

A GP referral letter indicating the number of sessions you are being referred for and stating that a Mental Health Treatment Plan has been lodged with Medicare.

In order to claim a rebate for your first session, you must bring both the Mental Health Treatment Plan and the GP referral letter to your first appointment.

The Medicare referral will provide a partial rebate for 6 sessions after which, if you wish to continue, you will need to return to your GP for a review. If appropriate, an additional referral may provide a partial rebate for a further 4 sessions. The rebate is available for a maximum of 10 sessions for each calendar year.

Some private health funds offer limited cover for psychological treatment, based on the level of your cover. Check with your fund to see if you are eligible. You cannot combine Medicare and Private Health insurance for the same session. If you are claiming via Medicare you have to use all your Medicare session entitlements before you use your Private Health insurance.
